Saris of Strength & Exhibition

DESIblitz

Requirement

Create a heritage documentary and exhibition funded by the Heritage Fund exploring Birmingham stories of resilience, labour, culture and identity, alongside University of Birmingham students.

Outcomes

DESIblitz supported by Aidem Digital engaged students in the project to assist with research and production of the film and exhibition. Working with academic and community partners, combining personal testimony, sari textiles and visual storytelling to explore heritage, gender, class and solidarity.

Challenges / Results

Challenges
  • Establishing the accuracy of the research and stories from individuals participating in the film.
  • Ensuring participants retained ownership over how their stories and images were presented.
  • Coordinating academic timetables, venue availability and participants’ commitments.
Results
  • Developed production, research and community standards for a focused historical timeline, strengthening the confidence in the film.
  • The documentary and exhibition amplified women’s voices, connecting labour, heritage and solidarity.
  • Stronger university and community partnerships created opportunities for future collaborative projects.

Social Value

Highlighted struggles of Asian women’s experiences fighting for working rights, strengthened intergenerational pride and solidarity, and gave students practical creative industry experience through university and community collaboration.
